TRADITIONAL RULERS CHARGED TO CHECK PIPELINE VANDALISATION, ILLEGAL REFINERIES IN THEIR COMMUNITIES

Bayelsa State Acting Governor, Chief Nestor Binabo has charged traditional rulers in the state to check the problems of pipeline vandalisation and illegal refineries in their domains.
The Acting Governor gave the charge at Ekowe, in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, where he paid a courtesy visit to the Monarch of Bomo Kingdom, King Joshua Igbugburu, in his palace.
Chief Binabo remarked that the incidence of pipeline vandalisation pollutes the land and rivers while refining crude oil was not only illegal, but was hazardous to the health of the people and destructive to the environment.
The Acting Governor, who noted that the visit to the Monarch was because of his administration’s respect for the traditional institution, said government would not spare any effort in improving the welfare conditions of traditional rulers in the state.
Chief Binabo said he was committed to the development of the state, irrespective of the very short period he has to stay.
He expressed appreciation to the Monarch of the Kingdom for the chieftaincy title given to him, adding that as a member of the King’s Council of Chiefs, he would dutifully attend the council meetings whenever he was invited.
In his remarks, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the February 11 gubernatorial election, Mr. Seriake Dickson lauded the people of the Kingdom for their love and support for the PDP since 1999, pointing out that this was the time they needed to demonstrate that love and support.
Mr. Dickson promised that if voted into office, he would provide good roads, quality education, well-equipped hospitals as well as sustain the prevailing peace in the state.
He called on the people to troop out en-masse on Saturday to cast their votes for the PDP, adding that they should do so peacefully, without any acrimony or violence.
In the address of welcome, read on their behalf by the Palace Protocol Officer, Mr. Dealtry Dickson, the people of Bomo Kingdom urged the party candidate to complete the Yenagoa/Oporoma/Ukubie road project because of its socio-economic importance.
The people advised politicians in the state to play by the rules of the game and shun thuggery, violence or any unwholesome act that would bring shame to the state.
They lauded the Acting Governor for appointing Professor Millionaire Abowei, a son of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, as Secretary to the State Government.
Highlight of the visit was the conferment of the chieftaincy title of “Okulolou of Bayelsa” on the Acting Governor as well as the presentation of a walking stick.
“Okulolou” is the name of tree, reputed for its height and strength, and found in swampy areas.
