THE STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ELECTED A NEW SPEAKER


The State House of Assembly has elected a new Speaker, Mr. Benson Friday Kombowei, representing Southern Ijaw Constituency Four. Mr. Kombowei’s election followed resignation of the former speaker, Chief Nestor Binabo who argued that in deference to the Federal Character Principle and in the light of the emergence of the governor of the state from his senatorial district (Bayelsa). The Speaker’s nomination which was not contested, was moved by Mr. James Ayobegha and was seconded Mr. Alfred Egba.
Mr. Kombowei, in his acceptance speech, thanked members for investing their trust in him, and equally expressed appreciation to Governor Seriake Dickson for creating the right atmosphere for the election to be concluded without any interference. The Speaker also promised to run an inclusive government, stressing that with cooperation of members, the House will enact laws for the improvement of the lives of the people.
