BAYELSA GOVT. TO REHABILITATE JETTY ROAD

Bayelsa State Government is to immediately commence work on the renovation of the dilapidated stretch of Harbour Road linking Swali community and the Ekoli Bridge.
Acting Governor, Chief Nestor Binabo disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists in Government House, shortly after an unscheduled visit to the deplorable stretch of the road.
Chief Binabo said he has directed the fish sellers, who have taken over the bad stretch of the road, to vacate the area within 48 hours so that work can commence.
Acknowledging that the brief relocation might cause the traders some inconvenience, Chief Binabo said the over-riding interest is that the bad portion of the road will be rehabilitated for the use of all Bayelsans.
The Acting Governor, who noted that the rehabilitation work would be executed through direct labour to save cost, stressed that work would commence immediately.
Speaking on the failed portion of the road just before the Ekoli bridge-head, Chief Binabo said the extent of the damage requires time as well as serious financial out-lay, pointing out that his time in office was too short to venture into the rehabilitation of the bridge-head.
In a separate interview, chairlady of the fish sellers association, Mrs. Singesi Tafiame said in spite of the order asking them to vacate the area, the plan to rehabilitate the road was a welcome development.
