ISMOND ASK SHELL TO SEND RELIEF MATERIALS TO COMMUNITIES AFFECTED BY THE SPILL FROM BONGA OIL

The Ijaw Survival Movement of the Niger Delta, ISMOND has asked the Shell Petroleum Development Company to urgently send relief materials and food items to communities affected by the spill from Bonga Oil Field in the state. The group also called on SPDC to carry out a thorough clean up of the environment polluted by the spill. To this end, it wants measures put in place to curtail further spread of the slick to the seas, rivers, creeks, lakes as well as ponds and communities along the coastal line. Spokesman of the group and former President of Mosend, Comrade Deo-Doupere Kalsuo urged the company to relocate affected persons while rehabilitation process should commence immediately. Other groups that also attended the one day meeting were Ijaw National Congress, Akassa and Olodiama clans, Ijaw Youths council (IYC) and the Movement for the Survival of Ijaw Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta. The groups called on the states affected by the spill and the federal government to prevail on SPDC to undertake genuine remediation efforts. They emphasized that an environment impact Assessment Agency has been contacted to critically assess the level of damage done to the region and recommend appropriate compensation for the victims.
