GOVERNMENT SETS UP COMMITTEES TO PROVIDE RELIEF MATERIALS TO COMMUNITIES AFFECTED BY CHEVRON GAS EXPLOSION AND TO ASSESS THE EXTENT OF DAMAGE


The Governor of Bayelsa state, represented by his deputy, Chief Werinipre Seibarugu has expressed displeasure at the attitude of Chevron who is yet to provide relief materials to the affected communities. He said the multi-national company needed to be responsive to their social responsibilities.
The Governor appealed to the communities affected to remain peaceful as government is taking urgent steps to address their plight. Chief Sylva who made the appeal at a stakeholders meeting held at government house Yenagoa, has set up a committee to immediately provide relief materials and medical assistance for the affected communities of the Chevron rig gas explosion. A technical committee made up of professionals in the Ministry of Environment was also set up to assess the extent of damage to the impacted communities.
The lawmaker representing Southern Ijaw constituency four in the Bayelsa state House of Assembly, Mr. Benson Konbowei, Commissioner for Environment, Chief Robert Enogha and Commissioner for Energy, Mr. Maxwell Oko, also attended the meeting amongst others.
The committee comprises the State Ministries of Environment and Health, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Relief Materials, the Regional Development Agencies for KEFES and DODO as well as Chevron Nigeria Limited.
