SURMOUNTING THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

A fresh fair campaign to ensure hygienic and evergreen environment has been launched by the state government. Speaking at the maiden summit which was organized by the State Ministry of Environment, Governor Timipre Sylva urged the people to be in the vanguard for the protection of the environment. Governor Sylva stated that due to the delicate nature of the environment especially that of the state prone to hazards associated with sea level rise, it was imperative that deliberative preventive measures taken to check the trend.
While Governor Sylva expressed regrets that the state bio-diversity was fast disappearing, he also stressed that, if the environment is left unprotected, the damage to the environment through human activities cannot be reserved.  Chief Sylva condemns illegal refineries pipeline vandalization, indiscriminate abuse of forest reserves, as such trends could endanger future generations who will be victims of these practices.
While acknowledging that the major source of pollution in the Niger Delta was from the oil companies, the Governor observed that human activities have also contributed largely to environmental degradation.
Speaking on the theme ”Surmounting the Environmental Challenges” the State Commissioner of Environment, Chief Roberts Enogha said the initiative was being introduced as a campaign mechanism of the ministry to ensure a clean and green environment. Chief Enogha stated that while oil companies are being accused of environmental abuses, the people should also change their orientation towards making a difference in the protection of the environment.
