GOV. SYLVA DEFIES HEAVY DOWNPOUR; LAVISH CAR AND CASH GIFTS ON TEACHERS


Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, today defied the heavy downpour to join teachers in the state to celebrate the World Teachers’ Day in Yenagoa.
 
Addressing the teachers at the Peace Park in Yenagoa, Chief Sylva announced a donation of N500.000=00 to teachers in each of the eight local government areas of the state that participated in the march past.
 
The Governor also announced the approval of two official cars for the state N.U.T.,   adding that the vehicles will be delivered to the secretariat of the N.U.T. by next week.
 
Chief Sylva used the opportunity to direct the Ministry of Works and Transport to immediately commence work on the short stretch of road leading to the Teachers’ House in Yenizue-Gene.
 
Responding to the issue of non-payment of three years arrears promotions and annual increment to primary and Basic Junior Secondary School teachers, Governor Sylva stated that the chairman of the State Primary Schools Board was already working on the matter.
 
The governor further directed the Commissioner of Education to immediately set up a committee to look into all the other issues raised by the state chairman while presented his address.
 
Chief Sylva, who said he was impressed by the display of enthusiasm by the teachers, urged other civil servants in the state to take a cue from the teachers and show more commitment in their work.
 
Commenting on efforts made by government towards improving infrastructure in the educational system, Chief Sylva noted that two model primary schools would be built in each of the eight local government areas of the state, pointing out that work would commence in the dry season.
 
He also said government was embarking on the construction of an international standard model secondary school in each of the three senatorial districts.
 
According to the governor, the focus of his administration was to develop the capacity of teachers so as to improve their quality of teaching.
 
Speaking on “Teachers for gender equality”, which was the theme of the teachers’ day celebration, Dr. Juliana Asodike of the University of Port Harcourt stressed the need for teachers to be effective agents of change for gender equality.
 
State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Tuemi Asuka called on managers of the educational system to improve its standard as education was crucial to the development of any society.
 
He urged teachers to collaborate with government towards improving the educational system in the state.
 
Earlier, chairman of the state N.U.T., Alabo Christopher Eriware had enumerated some of the challenges affecting the Union, among which were the need for vehicles, access road to the Teachers’ House, non-payment of promotion and annual increment arrears.
 
Alabo Eriware, who lauded the governor for accepting to pay the new N18,000=00 minimum wage, expressed hope that this will be effected in the earliest possible time.
