BAYELSA PLANS FOR POST – OIL ECONOMY

Bayelsa State Government has started laying the foundation for a post-oil economy as the governor, Chief Timipre Sylva today swore-in a Special Adviser on renewable energy.
While delivering his charge to the new appointee, Mrs. Timi Agara, Governor Sylva said the state must begin to fashion ways to shift from its present dependence on oil because oil is a non-renewable source of energy.
“For now Bayelsa is almost totally dependent on oil, which is a non-renewable source of energy.  We must begin to look inwards and re-position ourselves for the new challenge”, the Governor said.
Governor Sylva remarked that it has become imperative for nations and societies to begin to explore alternative source of energy.
Chief Sylva further explained that it was this same thinking that informed government’s decision to invest heavily in agriculture with a view to making it the main stay of the state’s economy, rather than continue depending on oil, as the major revenue earner in the state.
The Governor charged the new – appointee, whom he described as a “round peg in a round hole”, to take her work seriously, as so much will depend on the quality of advice she gives.
He said the government and people of the state expect so much from her, pointing out that she cannot afford to disappoint.
